A visit to Nehru Place -- A nice buy

Some days ago i visited Nehru Place, a market that boasts of as the biggest computer market of india. I visited mainly for meeting Dinesh at UnitedVillages for a job interview. After having a brief and a nice talk with pooja and Dinesh who are a bunch of wonderful persons , I decided to give a try to such a geek loving place, after browsing through shops suddenly i show a nice piece of hardware known as keyboard lying in a shop, so what`s so unique about that ?

Actually it was a bilingual keyboard from intex featuring both Hindi and English, It was a very nice piece of hardware that any person will just love to have . Have a look



The keyboard layout however doesn`t fit in the phonetic layout that i use in scim , But still it`s a nice thing to posses, looks like it`s a remington layout still google for layouts and if i can`t find one to embed in scim will try to make one of my own, let` hope i find one.

Theory behind Multilingual domains and security issues

Well the topic of multilingual domains is really looking very interesting to me , so here am i in my 2nd night reading about multilingual domains.

Now as i have studied currently Every Web addresses are typically expressed using Uniform Resource Identifiers or URIs. The URI syntax defined in RFC 3986 STD 66 (Uniform Resource Identifier (URI): Generic Syntax) limits web address or uri`s to limit to english characters and numerals. Now if we want to start गाैरव.com this is not possible with the RFC 3986 standard.

So for enabling the registration of domain names as गाैरव.com a new concept of IDN (internationalized domain names) was agreed by IETF in March 2003 and was defined in RFC 3490,3491, 3492 and 3454.

Now as the implementation part goes when a user request a domain name in it`s native format (Unicode for hindi) it is changed/Encoded in punycode before going to the DNS. The Encoding is done at the Application part (Usually by the browsers) and the punycode is sent to to the browsers.Remember this that the current DNS and name resolver infrastructure cannot handle unicode based(non-ascii) domain names, that`s why they are encoded into punycode.

For converting hindi domains into punycode and vice versa use http://mct.verisign-grs.com/index.shtml

The conversion between ASCII and Non-ASCII formats is done by algorithms ToASCII and ToUnicode. I will be giving a separate blog entry for these algo`s.

Now in last blog entry we discussed about the inconsistencies developed due to the unicode representation of IDN. Now i realized something far dangerous spoofing .

So how does concept of spoofing is applied here, let`s take the example of only mld i can found on net raftaar.com , the origial रफ़्तार.com (Punycode http://xn--h2bnoc2dn7h.com ) is currently spoofed with a different website रफ्तार.com(Punycode http://xn--h2bnoc3e8d.com) which is a parked website and You can see that both of the domain names are so similar in unicode representation but produces a very different punycode string. Which could result in spoofing any user to a alternate website, it`s dangerous.

In general this kind of attack is known as a homograph spoofing attack. On February 7, 2005, Slashdot reported that this exploit was disclosed at the hacker conference Shmoocon with an example available at http://www.shmoo.com/idn/.

Since it is such a obvious way of spoofing people this has been taken very seriously by the IDNA , since they were responsible for changing the unicode to the punycode strings. Among which IE7 has implemented a anti-phishing filter to avoid this kind of spoofing and Mozilla Foundation (firefox) shows the punycode URLs instead of the unicode, thus thwarting any attacks while still allowing people to access websites on an IDN domain.

Still this remains a very promising and necessary technology will talk about the algos and methodology used while encoding and decoding punycode and how DNS handles the requests.

Multilingual Domains

I have been trying to search about multilingual domains fortnight. The Technology is impressive but at a very nascent stage right now, the biggest hurdle is that still users are required to type .com after the domain , Confused ?

Well let me explain somethings ,

What is a multilingual domain ?
A domain name that is not in default ASCII interface, The English words like google.com are all transmitted in ASCII format. While गाैरव.com is a Hindi(multilingual) domain which i can register and use as a domain name, remember it is written in Unicode which is a NON-ASCII character.

So how it works ?

Let me try to make a rough Sketch how it works


1. A Registrar receives an IDN within an ASCII TLD (.com or .net) from the registrant.
2.The Registrar prepares the ISO 10646 character sequence as described in the Preparation of Internationalized Host Names Internet Draft5.
3.the Registrar transforms the ISO 10646 sequence into an ASCII PunyCode string.
4.The Registrar registers the domain
5.The Registry converts the Punycode domain to the ISO 10646 character sequence and prepares the sequence
6.The Registry transforms the prepared ISO 10646 character sequence into an ASCII Punycode string if it is matches with the original string passed by the Registrar, then the registration is permitted. If the strings do not match, then the domain was not prepared properly and the registration attempt is denied.

PS: I may be wrong and these are not the standards.

Isn`t there any inconsistency ?

Yes there is when the ASCII code is changed into the punycode small phonetic characters like halant in hindi can change the punycode with a larger difference, that`s why if punycode find a similar domain registered it denies the domain registration, But this not always works.

Still i am looking for more information , so this is surely going to be topic for next couple of days

Windows and linux are different

Windows users are more or less in a customer-supplier relationship:
They pay for software, for warranties, for support, and so on. They

A Windows user will not endear himself by bringing his habitual

Ubuntu Official Magazine -- Fullcircle

So ubuntu is slowly becoming a religion, Recently saw the Fredrick mail about the Full Circle a initiative by Ubuntu Marketing Team.

So what is fullcircle :

In Simple words , it`s a magazine featuring Ubuntu based articles, releases, Stories etc etc, (also featurinng kubuntu, xubuntu , edubuntu ),

All in all i can see 12 categories so far it`s more based on user reviews than technical articles ( i never understand what`s the use of telling again and again to people , hey linux is so good , it turned my wife into JLo) uff

Typing Hindi through SCIM

SCIM is the name of the program that will allow you to input Hindi in Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake.


1. Open system System>Administration>Language Support




2. and check Hindi to install required locale files




3. then log out (System>Quit>Log Out), and login again.

Note : You should already be able to use SCIM Hindi input in a few applications, like gedit (Application>Accessories>Text Editor), by right clicking on the document, then selecting Input Methods>SCIM Input Method. However, it won't work in the others, like Open Office.

However you can setup SCIM to work with Other Applications with given method

The recommended method to set up SCIM input is to create 75scim file under /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ with following lines (if you have 90im-switch, better to remove it for this setup)

export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
export XIM_PROGRAM="/usr/bin/scim -d"
export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
export QT_IM_MODULE=scim

* After your setup, restart at least your X session. (ctrl-alt-backspace!)

Note :- you need to install scim-qtimm and skim to get it working on Kde

Fiesty......mmmm

So Fiesty is out....So ?

Are man finally there is ubuntu on my system, lolz. Fedora never seem to really liked me and yum just hang in between downloading packages...

Well there are many cool effects in fiesty , but this guy seems pretty heavy or may be i forgot to mention my system is 3 year old and i am having a meagre of 384 MB of memory that too of very low speed hehe lolz

Beryl effects were cool, I have compiled and used this stuff before and this is the best USP currently linux seems to have.

Users can download fiesty from www.ubuntu.com, the US repo`s seems to be faster this time than indian one.

So now what ?, Well i disabled beryl , remove all splashy themes , installing xfce and getting ready to code again , Nowdays php and ajax are love again , this time due to commercial reasons ;)

Have to look at Ruby as soon as possible it`s making quite a stir in the web world, Hmm man i have so much of work pending.

A bad day at counter strike -- A nice idea

It was a pretty bad day at CS, I was relly playing like a noob , Well Still i got a nice idea The latency we were getting was nearly 120 and the game was nearly playable, Reasons ??

The data that was being transferred was first going to the proxy server from F hostel and then to the D hostel , so we were traversing two different nw for data transfer.

Solution : if we manage to get a dedicated counter strike server installed and preferably on the proxy server that could solve the problem.

Advantages: The server is up 24*7 (atleast when we are connected to proxy)
The hostel guys can login with the local ip that is 192.168.0.254
and the guys living outside can play with a real ip , so what we have is a real dedicated counter strike server.

Sound easy isn`t it , :) , well it is , But the problem is it`s really difficult to make it official and Convincing strategy would work untill i am in this college , Still i would be giving a try to that , sounds a real great idea and if i want to play with my college guys after my college ends, this is the only way

so let`s pray this happens

Morning is about to begin

Well it`s 5:30 in the morning and i am still on my PC, downloading templates arranging them , browsing webhostingtalk.com ( a pretty good site for any budding hosting company.)

My life has taken a new turn in last 6 months, My fan following has taken a big boost , it has taken from a small number of linux users and some computer freaks to literary , mechy people and some beautiful gals.

So now what , Should i meet them interact with them , make new friends or slowly try part away from all, I prefer the second option , It`s always easy to leave things if you stop thinking about it few days ago, I don`t know how i am going to live after the college , But ye to aana hi tha...

Addiction to counterstrike

I am 75% addicted to Counterstrike. What about you?

End of an ERA -- My college 4 years -- Part 1

End of an era ? , I never sounded so negative. But the truth has to be told. These days are going to end up in next 42 days and whatever i do i am not getting them back.
SO what is the best way to end them:- Celebrate them , love people , enjoy my last days .....
But some memories are needed to be told , these 4 years has been most weird (if not best) days of my life, I have learnt so much in this college that sometime i wonder would i have learned so much in a good repo college, This question is impossible to answer ?

I have been battered here, i have been slaughted here, I was in love( still i am , but prefer the word was), I have been worshiped here, I have been loved here, And foremost of all I have been Blindly trusted here.

Why ?,Was i was worth of it ? Did i really deserve that ? (both slaughter and Worship) , Do the loneliness meant something ?,I don`t know the answers , But may be , may be i could help explaining the turn ups and downs of my last 4 years and you decide what was truth and how cheap i am :)

Why Vista Sucks

Vista which was suppose to be more secure, more reliable, easy to use, (showered with all the nice marketing terminologies) is already showing its true colors.

It has a serious security flow that allows any application to play with the core kernel, this is potentially dangerous as someone can use this to write a virus, put a trojan, infect your pc with a spyware and create all kinds of havoc. Read more.

The blog world is filled with how insecure Vista is. Some more interesting reading. BBC says:

Microsoft has admitted that speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders.

Forbes.com screams: More than five years in the making, more than 50 million lines of code …. Vista is at best mildly annoying and at worst makes you want to rush to Redmond, Wash. and rip somebody’s liver out.

Please don’t do anything like ripping anyones liver. Just rip out Vista and put Linux :)

GURU

Just returning from watching GURU, Man this movie is a must must go for any rebel in the country (yes i think me as a rebel).

Along with it the ManiRatnam`s made meenu love with gurubhai looks so pure and the resultant Jealous in his husband (madhvan), That is something i have seen in Indian Cinema after a long long time.

The message is clear you want things to change , you have to step ahead and change the things and be sure people will be there to pull your legs.

All in all a definitely goer....
